But why is it so much harder to lose weight than to gain it? Because it takes a matter of minutes (sometimes seconds) to eat 100 calories, but longer to burn it off.

Looking at the big picture of losing say 30 or 40 pounds can feel daunting, so give yourself a break. That is, break your goal down into small doable pieces. Accumulate a 100 calorie deficit per day ? burn 100 calories more than you consume ? and you will lose 10 pounds by the end of the year. Double that and you?ve lost 20! It?s easier than you might think.

First, do you ever eat something just because it?s there? You can eat a couple hundred calories and not even realize it. The mayo or dressing on a deli sandwich, the butter served with the bread basket or a cookie from the office lunch room? before you know it you?ve eaten 100 calories.

Playing with parents and carers is wonderful but playing with friends of their own age and older children is enriching and will help them learn social skills.

What are the benefits of play?

There are many ways in which children benefit from play. It has been proven by psychologists that children who do not play fail to thrive. For play to be meaningful, children need someone to play with, choice, variety and enthusiasm. The benefits of play can be seen in five areas, they are:

Physical ? Developing co-ordination, physical fitness and health Social ? learning about friendships, personality and emotions Emotional ? practicing adult roles through role play Language ? communication skills, problem solving Cognitive ? through play children develop an understanding of concepts, group objects and explore different materials Children need a range of toys and materials to develop in all of the five areas.

Different types of play and their value

Play can take many different shapes and forms however your child needs a balance of all forms in order to develop into a well-rounded adult.

University of Kansas Medical Center Teams with BioImagene to Develop

0 Comments | Wireless News, Jul 6, 2010

BioImagene, Inc., a provider of digital pathology solutions, announced a collaboration with the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine to develop Companion Algorithms for next generation companion diagnostics for digital pathology.

Under the terms of the collaboration, researchers from KUMC and BioImagene said they will work together to develop new Companion Algorithms for DNA Ploidy analysis and other tumor markers, including breast, colon and gynecologic. Researchers and clinicians from KUMC will also utilize BioImagene’s iScan Coreo AU slide scanner and Virtuoso digital pathology software to digitize samples and collaborate on development and validation of algorithms for diagnostic use.

“The era of pharmacodiagnostics has expanded the pathologist’s role of “chief diagnostician,” with HER2 providing pathologists with many lessons on optimal assessment of biomarkers to help qualify patients for individualized therapies,” said Ossama Tawfik, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Vice-Chair of Education and Outreach, and Director, Anatomic & Surgical Pathology at the University of Kansas Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. “KUMC looks forward to partnering with BioImagene to advance digital pathology and help pathologists and researchers transition from traditional microscopes to digitized images, which will further standardize interpretation and improve accuracy and efficiency.”

“Digital Pathology is a highly disruptive innovation. That makes it more important than ever for the pioneers in the industry to work with academic thought leaders. That’s the only way to ensure that the full potential of this innovation will be realized quickly, and adopted widely

And it’ll most probably be caused by a loss of water and/or muscle, rather than your unwanted excess body fat.

- Be realistic and “go with the flow.” The pounds didn’t come on overnight, so don’t expect them to disappear in a jiffy too. And sometimes the weight loss isn’t as fast (or as much) as planned. But don’t get stressed out, because stress will only add on the pounds. It’s important that you don’t think of the weight loss process as “all or nothing.” Instead, think of it as “slowly but surely.” The weight may go up a little sometimes, but if you stick to your plan, you’ll still be delighted at the end of the year!

Use these simple steps and make a positive difference to your life this year! Best of luck!

Some of them come in surprising places, such as consolidation.

When you think consolidation, you often think of those in money trouble. But consolidation is an appropriate approach to finding extra money in your budget. You may not realize how much you can really save by consolidating things in your life.

Let’s consider the most obvious area — your credit card debt. Hopefully, you have a goal to get rid of your credit card debt. Consolidation can be effective in eliminating your debt and saving you thousands on interest charges. The key to consolidation is this: You must cut up your former cards and stop charging to them. If you don’t, you are just adding to your debt, not eliminating it.

Consolidation is simple. You take all of your credit card balances and move them to a single credit card with a lower interest rate. You still have the same amount of debt, but by consolidating them, you will slightly lower your monthly payment.

Close call as car plows into home

0 Comments | New Haven Register, Jul 28, 2010 | by Helen Bennett Harvey

By Brian McCready Milford Bureau Chief bmccready@newhavenregister.com

MILFORD — For Matthew A. Micros, the span of 3 feet Monday evening may not have only saved his life, but also ensured his marriage will proceed as planned next month.

Micros, 43, was on the treadmill inside his 93 Mark St. home in the Woodmont section a few minutes before 7 p.m. when he saw a car hit an occupied car in front of his house.

But instead of stopping, the first car accelerated, and next thing he knew, Micros had jumped off his treadmill as the car plowed into his home, stopping 3 feet short of him. Nearby was his fiancA(c)e, Katy Nicholas, whom he will marry Aug. 7, and his dog.

“I saw the whole thing,” Micros said. “That was the crazy thing about it. I was thinking the car was going to … brake, but it never did.”

“I’m glad no one was seriously hurt, and … it was not the wedding gift we had in mind,” said Micros, who is the assistant soccer coach at Wesleyan University and runs the youth soccer Connecticut Football Club. “It’s awful that it happened and inconvenient, but it could have been tragic.”

Police spokesman Officer Jeffrey Nielsen said a car driven by Jayne Feher, 55, of 8 Gillette St., struck an occupied car, and then hit the house. He said the investigation revealed Feher had an elevated blood alcohol content.

The driver of the second vehicle suffered minor injuries, Nielsen said.

Micros said the left side of his porch was destroyed, and he is still sorting out how much damage occurred to his home, which is at the corner of Mark and Kings Highway. The city building inspector said the house was safe for occupancy, according to Nielsen. City officials are determining the full extent of the damage, Micros said.

Micros said the situation could have been worse: The dog was about to be let out in the front yard, but as he had just watered the grass he asked his fiancA(c)e to wait, and moments later the car came speeding into his yard and his home.

“Thank God (my dog) wasn’t out there,” Micros said.

Micros said he rushed to help Feher, but she appeared fine

Harness the power of the sun for cash Iain Johnson

0 Comments | Brentwood Gazette, Jul 28, 2010 | by Iain Johnson

A NEW business in Warley is planning on bringing some sunshine into residents’ lives by saving cash on their energy bills.

The Ecoteam, based in The Drive, is accredited by the Government under the Microgeneration Scheme as an installer of photovoltaic systems, commonly known as solar panel heating. Although the initial cost for a system is between Pounds 4,000 and Pounds 20,000, new legislation which was passed in April means homeowners with such a renewable energy system will be paid for the energy they produce.

The amount is determined by the Feed in Tariff (FIT), which currently stands at 41.3p for every kilowatt hour (Kwh) of electricity generated.

The Government has guaranteed the FIT rate for 25 years from the point a household starts producing energy.

There is also the option of selling unused electricity to energy companies at 3p per Kwh.

Clawed back It is estimated that through the cashback scheme the cheapest PV system could be paid for in 13 years while the initial cost of the top-of-the-range model will be clawed back in around 10 years because it generates more electricity to sell on.

Joint owner of The Ecoteam, which was set up in 2007, is Felipe Gorsuch-Browne, 42, a former construction worker from Hartswood Road.

He said: “We went into it because we were told it was a good area to move into and the Government has put good incentives in place for people on this.

“What I think is really important is to say that we are not like a typical double-glazing sales company and we are not interested in pressure sales.

“We are specialists in solar and we do not ask you to place an order during an initial visit.

“Also the cash back from the Government offers a better return than putting your money into many traditional places, such as bank accounts.”

Long after the person is gone, the person who is left behind often still feels addicted to that person. Or they still strongly feel their presence around them and feel that presence is reflected in omens, coincidences and synchronicities that occur in their lives. If you are completely obsessed with an individual ? if you see or feel their presence everywhere, you are most likely the victim of a live haunting.

Amateur Shamans and Witchlets

Sometimes you deliberately cross such a person, other times they see him or herself as an agent of karma and sometimes you don?t know them at all. People playing with magick are a growing problem in terms of astral pollution on our planet. They are influenced by television shows, movies and the availability of spell books on the market.

These individuals are generally quite harmless, but they can cause havoc in one?s life on the mundane level.

The usual basis of MLM is you see some product which is often, not worth the money, untested, unproven that you will get the results it claims to give you, and most importantly it might be dangerous. Just think, would you buy a bottle of green juice off someone on a street corner because they claim it will make you shed 100 pounds? Now the MLM I will talk about here is the “product” scam. This one is you are buying a product or joining up to work for them selling there product. If you buy the product they will tell you that you can get rich if you get others to sign up. You will be there sponsor and when they join to sell you 40% of the product price and if you sign up another you get 20% of there product price and so on. Or you need to sign up for the gold or platinum membership and make even more money, just $199.99 or more and don?t worry you?ll make that money back in no time.

Adopt adorable cat

0 Comments | Herald Express; Torquay (UK), Jul 28, 2010

THE Blue Cross Torbay Adoption Cat Adoption centre is located on the Teignmouth Road between Torquay and Maidencombe opposite Brunel Manor.

The centre has many adorable cats looking for new homes, varying in age, colour and personality, and takes time to ensure each cat is carefully suited to its new owner, creating a successful, lifetime relationship.

All adopted cats are neutered, microchipped, de-flead, wormed, health checked by a vet and have had at least their first vaccination. We ask for an adoption fee of Pounds 50, plus you get four weeks’ free insurance.

Can anyone offer Sensy a new home? She is a sweet little cat that won’t ask for much, just two meals a day, a warm spot to sleep in and the occasional bit of fuss from her new owners. Sensy would love to find a new home before the summer is over so she too can enjoy this lovely sunshine we have been having.
